Why convert GIF to PNG?

GIF is limited to a 256-color palette, which is why GIFs often look grainy or banded. PNG supports millions of colors plus full alpha transparency, making it the better format for logos, screenshots and any still image. Converting GIF to PNG gives you a lossless file that every editor and platform accepts without the palette limitations.

What about animated GIFs?

Browsers expose only the first frame of an animated GIF to the conversion canvas, so converting an animated GIF produces a still PNG of its first frame. That is handy when you want a thumbnail or poster image for an animation. Producing animated output is not currently supported.

Lossless and transparent

PNG preserves every pixel exactly, and any transparency in the GIF is kept in the output. If you need a smaller file for the web instead, consider converting to WEBP, which compresses further while keeping transparency.
