The technical difference between HEIC and PNG

iPhones save HEIC using HEVC (H.265) intra-frame compression — the same codec technology used for video keyframes, just applied to a single still image. That's why a HEIC photo runs roughly half the file size of an equivalent-quality JPG. PNG works the opposite way: no prediction tricks, just lossless DEFLATE compression on the raw pixel grid.
